What is a Phobia?
A phobia is different from a strong dislike of something. If you have a phobia you will avoid places or circumstances where it is triggered. You may be hypervigilant – always looking out for the thing you fear- eg spiders. You will experience a physical response such as rapid breathing or heightened heart rate or palpitations, sweating, nausea or dizziness.
Where do Phobias come from?
There are a number of theories about how phobias develop. Some phobias develop from a single negative emotional event connected with the thing that is feared. The response then becomes a learned behavior. For example, if you were bitten by a dog when you were younger you may avoid all dogs in the future. Some are inherited phobias from our parents.
There are many types of phobias and include:
- Fear of Flying
- Fear of Dentists
- Fear of Needles
- Fear of Heights
- Social phobias
