The definition of a phobia is “an irrational, obsessive, and intense fear that is focused on a specific circumstance, idea or thing.” If you have a phobia you can experience an overwhelming fear and desire to avoid that trigger situation. Phobias are part of the fight or flight response to things or situations that the body perceives as a danger. It’s as if the brain’s safety alarm system has become over sensitive and triggers when there is not really any real danger or threat. It is more common than you think. In the UK around 70 percent experience a mild phobic response and about 20 percent of those have a serious enough issue to fit the above definition. Our Hypnotherapy for phobias and fears programme  is an effective and safe method  of minimizing those feelings of fear  and getting you back in control again.

What is a Phobia?

A phobia is different from a strong dislike of something. If you have a phobia you will avoid places or circumstances where it is triggered. You may be hypervigilant – always looking out for the thing you fear- eg spiders. You will experience a physical response such as rapid breathing or heightened heart rate or palpitations, sweating, nausea or dizziness.

Where do Phobias come from?

There are a number of theories about how phobias develop. Some phobias develop from a single negative emotional event connected with the thing that is feared. The response then becomes a learned behavior. For example, if  you were bitten by a dog when you were younger you may avoid all dogs in the future. Some are inherited  phobias from our parents.

There are many types of phobias  and include:

  • Fear of Flying
  • Fear of Dentists
  • Fear of Needles
  • Fear of Heights
  • Claustrophobia
  • Agoraphobia
  • Social phobias

The anxiety and panic created by fears and phobias can impact people’s lives negatively and prevent them from living the life they want to live. Our Hypnotherapy for phobias programme can help you feel calmer about the problem so you can move forward to a more happier and positive future.
